If you want to run SWG: Awakening on Linux, you might run into some minor issues, which can still be quite annoying. This guide shows, how to setup SWG:Awakening with Lutris and a custom wine bottle.

Getting Ready

Before you start the install, you need the following:
  1. Lutris
  2. Your SWG Disks
  3. The SWGEmu Launcher Download
  4. The SWG Awakening Launcher
Game Installation

Once you are ready, you can start to install lutris. Follow these steps to do so:

1. Install Lutris from your system repository or as flatpak.

2. Create a new wine prefix for SWG: Awakening, using the X on the top right of Lutris. Name the prefix somwthing like swg-awakening.

3. Install SWG from your disks and then install SWGEmu on the prefix, using the SWGEmu Launcher, either Windows or Linux. Both work.

4. Make sure SWGEmu is up to date.

5. Make sure to use the wine-ge-8.26-x86_64 runner. For my Lutris install, this was the default runner, but this might change in the future.
(Important: Other runners might work, but may lead to issues with the mouse, namely mouse look not working or a single left click triggering double clicks, etc.)

4. Use winetricks to install corefonts and .NET 8. If you want to make sure, download .NET from the website and install as well. Make sure, Mono is installed on the prefix.

5. Install the Launcher, start it and set it up as you would normally do on Windows.
Note: The Launcher will start automatically after the installation (if you choose to do so). If you close it and try to start it afterwards, you might get a JavaScript error. This happens to me on every attempt to launch and I haven't been able to fix it. However, instead of running the launcher, just run the install and reinstall it. It only takes a minute and the launcher works fine.

6. Enjoy the game.

Common Issues

You might run into some issues when trying to launch the game. These are shown here, along with a fix, if possible.

1. Missing or broken textures (blank, black weird looking buttons, text, etc.)
There is not much you can do about it. It's a rendering issue, but the buttons should work and the text should be readable, albeit with some difficulties.

2. Mouse and Pointer Issues
This is a compatibility issues with SWG: Awakening. Make sure to use a GE runner and not your default system wine.

3. Launcher Black Screen
This is an issue with rendering and DirectX. You can try to reboot your system and reinstall the launcher. Note, that the launcher works fine, even though you can't see it, so clicking on the bottom right, where the PLAY button is, will stil launch the game.

4. Crackling Audio
Try to enable the option to lower PulseAudio Latency. You can also try to mess around with the esync and fsync options. This should fix your issue.

Additional Things

If you run into any issues, always make sure, to check your game files and reinstall, use a clean wine bottle and also try some different runnter settings. dgvodoo on many systems is causing problems, for example.

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR RUNNER after your originally set it up and installed SWG. It will likely BREAK YOUR INSTALL.

Note: This is an unofficial guide and support will most likely not be able to help you, with any Linux specific issues. There is also no guarantee, that this will work and I shall not be responible, if your installation breaks. If you need help, feel free to post here and once I get a chance, I will get back to you.
