SWGEmu Entertainer FAQ

The information in this FAQ was complied and adapted from a guide written by Mistress Aerea on SWGEmu.

The guide is broken into the following sections:

● The Basics
● Fundamentals of Entertainer
● Venues
● Tools of the Trade
● XP Progression
● Missions
● Macros
The basics

What is an entertainer?
Entertainer is one of the six starting professions. Any character can become an entertainer. If you did not start as one, you can still train in novice entertainer by conversing with an entertainer trainer NPC. An entertainer's primary responsibility is to heal battle fatigue and wounds to player's mind pools. Entertainers can also do basic image design (character modification) and buff mind pools at the specialized levels. The profession is a prerequisite for the specialized professions of Dancer, Musician, and Image Designer.

What characters are best for entertainer?
Your entertainer can be any race, but performing mostly relies on your character's action and stamina. Some races, such as humans, have bonuses in these areas which may suit those who wish to be primarily entertainers. You can also adjust your starting statistics using stat migration in the tutorial (takes effect immediately) or after your character enters the game (with the assistance of an Image Designer). Ironically, Twi'leks have a low action and stamina pool, and therefore do not necessarily make the best entertainers. (Don't let this discourage you. If you really want a Twi'lek entertainer, go right ahead. There are plenty of them.)

How do I become an entertainer?
Any character can become an entertainer. If you did not start as one, you can still train in novice entertainer by conversing with an entertainer trainer NPC. After gaining enough experience, you can get training from other players trained in entertainer or entertainer trainer NPCs.

Where Can I find NPC trainers?
You can find NPC entertainer trainers in most cantinas and theaters in NPC cities, and in many player cities. Here is a list of NPC city locations:

Fundamentals of Entertainer

Fundamentals of Dance

When you begin to dance, your most basic command is /startdance. This will bring up a popup window that gives you a list of the dances you currently know. To start a dance without the popup, type in /startdance + the dance name, for example: /startdance basic

After you begin to dance, you will be able to flourish your avatar, causing him or her to do various moves in the dance. There are eight possible flourishes per dance. You may flourish by using the command /flourish and choosing a number of 1-8. (e.g. /flourish 5)

Fundamentals of Music

When you begin to play, your most basic command is /startmusic. This will bring up a popup window that gives you a list of the songs you currently know. You must have your instrument equipped before you may begin playing music. To start a song without the popup, type in /startmusic + the song name, for example: /startmusic starwars1

After you begin playing, you will be able to flourish your avatar, causing him or her to do various moves in the performance as well as changing the song's sound. There are eight possible flourishes per song. You may flourish by using the command /flourish and choosing a number of 1-8. (e.g. /flourish 5)

Fundamentals of Image Design

To begin an Image Design session, you must be grouped with the person you are Image Designing. Your most basic command is /imagedesign. This will bring up the ID User Interface (UI) where you will be able to tab through the various panes to view which things you can currently change about people.

**note** Not all species or genders have things you can ID at first (the ones without hair or makeup options).

You may Image Design yourself by using the command /imagedesign self OR by keying CTRL+1 to select yourself and using /imagedesign

Venues

Where can Entertainers practice their art?
All Entertainer skills can be used anywhere in the galaxy, but the performance-based Entertainers cannot benefit their customers everywhere. Healing and buffs can only be given in Cantinas, Hotels, Theaters, and Taverns. At least one of these performance venues can be found in every NPC city, and many have two or even three performance venues.

What about player owned buildings?
Entertainers can heal (and buff) in player owned Cantinas and Theaters in player cities.

Are there venues for Image Designers?
While Image Designers may enjoy their craft anywhere in the galaxy without limitation, there are 4 Image Design Tents scattered throughout the galaxy in Theed, Moenia, Bestine, and Coronet. Image Designers may only perform stat migrations from inside an ID tent, but this skill is only gained after novice ID and is not technically and entertainer skill.

When can I place my own Cantina?
You must be a Master Dancer, Master Musician, or Master Chef to place a cantina. You may only place it in a level 2 city (Village) or above with the approval of the mayor or a militia member.

When can I place my own Theater?
Player Theaters may be placed only by Master Dancers and Master Musicians, and only in level 4 cities (City) or above with the approval of the mayor or a militia member.

What will happen to my Cantina or Theater if the city goes away?
Your structure will remain as normal, even if the city shrinks or goes away entirely. However, if you redeed it, you will have to find another city of the proper size in order to place it again.

What will happen to my Cantina or Theater if I drop Master Dancer, Master Musician, or Master Chef?
Your structure will remain as normal, however you will not be able to place the structure again if you redeed it.

Tools of the Trade

How do I market my skills?
As a beginning entertainer, you will not have many marketable skills. Your best bet is to get into a performing group and reap the benefits of numbers. This will help you gain healing XP, free training, and learn from those that have come before.

How can I prevent someone from using my passive healing services?
The command /denyservice will prevent someone from receiving benefits from your services. Keep in mind, /denyservice is a toggle. If you use it once on a person, when you use it again, the name will be removed from the list. This list does not extend beyond one playsession. Your /denyservice list is clean at each login.

What do I need to know about Clothing?
A competent Tailor is the Entertainer's best friend. I'm sorry, boys and girls, but the basic underwear is not in style now, and likely never will be. Many Entertainers make enough credits even when every inch of skin is covered. Not to say skimpy doesn't make tips, but try to avoid showing those undies.

How can you avoid fashion problems?
Familiarize yourself with your clothing options. A great site was set up by Tiaga at TKFashion. Here, he offers a catalog of all existing craftable clothing and the ability to view each piece in various colors so you can make things easier on your tailor by knowing every option available for the items you want. In addition to the clothing catalog, Tiaga offers color advice to help in making those difficult decisions.

What skill mods are useful?
You might want to consider picking up clothing with bio-engineered fatigue and mind healing built into it. This will make your healing more effective and quicker. Alternatively, you could pick up socketed clothing, and but the same SEAs into the sockets.

Should I bother with a makeover?
It's a simple fact that the more distinctive you can make yourself, the more you'll stand out in a crowd. If you stand out, more people are likely to try your services. In addition to clothing, this entails fixing up your personal image. Above all other things, make your character's image satisfy you first. If you're happy with your image, chances are good your happiness will rub off on your patrons and that's probably a good thing.

Where can I find Image Designers?
Image Designers will often be found in Image Design Tents which are located in Theed, Moenia, Bestine, and Coronet.

What are band commands?
The band commands are /bandflourish (1-8), /startband, /stopband, and /changebandmusic (song). These commands allow performers to synchronize their performances. However, only those performing Music may make full use of them. /bandflourish will work for both Dancers and Musicians, causing everyone to perform the same-numbered flourish. Musicians can take it a step further by using /bandflourish (1-8) (instrument) and cause only people using that instrument to perform the flourish. The band commands /startband, /stopband, and /changebandmusic are applicable only to those with instruments equipped.

Is there anything to be said for communicating with the audience?
Beyond all other tools, conversation or the lack thereof will leave a lasting impression on your patrons. This could easily be the deciding factor in their decision to come back again. This interaction may be something as simple as /greeting or /handshaking patrons as they walk through the door, or it may be an intense set of specific actions to take with patrons. Good approaches often include a question or comment about the patron's profession or style of dress. This serves as an icebreaker and helps the Entertainer and patron learn a little more about each other and guide further interaction.

XP Progression

What types of XP do I need to progress in the Entertainer profession?
There are 4 types of XP in the entertainer profession: Dance XP, Music XP, Entertainer Healing XP, and Image Design XP. To master the entertainer profession, you will need all 4 types of experience.

Caveat: The techniques for gaining xp that I list below are the optimal ways to gain xp, but I highly recommend you take your time as you progress through the profession. It will give you a more thorough understanding of Entertainer, and will help you relate to other Entertainers more easily.

How do I gain Dance XP efficiently?
The best way to earn Dance XP efficiently is to dance and flourish. To make the most Dance XP, you should dance your highest-level dance and flourish at least twice per XP tic (~10 seconds). A chart for dancing XP can be found here:

How do I gain Music XP efficiently?
The best way to earn Music XP efficiently is play music and flourish. To make the most Music XP, you should play your highest-level song and your highest-level instrument. You should also flourish at least twice per XP tic (~10 seconds). A chart for dancing XP can be found above.

Alternatively, music XP can be gained by crafting instruments. You will need some generic crafting tools and a lot of resources, but many people swear by this method. A guide can be found here:
Musician crafting grind template.
In anticipation of grinding to Master Musician and hearing the groans about group XP not working properly, I've decided to research the crafting portion to better prepare the grind...plus the servers are down and I had a bit of tunnel vision. If you see any errors or a better path, please feel free to let me know.

Preface:
-The following is based on information gathered from...
http://www.swgemu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48117
http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Instruments
Kodan'sSWG ProfCalc v4.0
-All experience is based on non-practice mode crafting, the numbers will change based on practice mode, which you'd want to do so I will update when I have further information.
-The template uses only Steel and Aluminum, if you use this template and you have the option to use Steel or Aluminum, use Steel.
-Numbers are rounded down so the total will be off but not by much.

Novice Entertainer to Novice Musician
-XP required- 116,000
-Instrument crafted- Slitherhorn, 94XP per craft session(practice)
-Craft sessions needed- 1235
-Resources required- 55,575 metal(steel)

Novice Musician to 2xxx
-XP required- 212,500
-Instrument crafted- Fanfar, 115XP per craft session(practice)
-Craft sessions needed- 1848
-Resources required- 101,640 metal(steel)

2xxx to 3xxx
-XP required- 175,000
-Instrument crafted- Traz, 126XP per craft session(practice mode)
-Craft sessions needed- 1389
-Resources required- 62,505 non-ferrous metal(aluminum), 20,835 metal(steel)

3xxx to 4xxx
-XP required- 225,000
-Instrument crafted- Bandfill, 157XP per craft session(practice mode)
-Craft sessions needed- 1434
-Resources required- 71,700 ferrous metal(steel), 35,850 aluminum

4xxx to xx4x
-XP required- 612,500
-Instrument crafted- Nalargon. 472XP per craft session(practice mode)
-Craft sessions needed- 1298
-Resources required- 194,700 ferrous metal(steel), 97,350 aluminum

Total XP required- 1,341,000
Total craft sessions- 7204
Total resources required 444,450 steel, 195,705 aluminum

With a good craft macro taking about 10 seconds per craft session minus lag, time taken from training it should take roughly 20 hours to cap your Musician XP.
How do I gain Image Design XP efficiently?
The first rule is to find other people to work with on Image Design. That way you'll double your XP. (Actually the way it's usually worded is that if you work on yourself, your XP gain is reduced to half.) For the first two boxes of ID, your best XP will come from changing hairstyles. After that, you will gain the ability to change eye color, and that is what most aspiring ID's work on when they're grinding.

How do I gain Entertainer Healing XP efficiently?
Entertainer Healing XP is gained by healing mind wounds and battle fatigue of your audience. The important thing to know is that this is SHARED among group members. Any entertainer in your group that heals a patron will share the XP with all other performing entertainers. It is to your benefit, therefore to be in a large group in a heavily trafficked area - Coronet, Theed, Eisley.

As an entertainer, healing XP should come quickly enough, well before you've finished both music and dance. Once you get to the elite professions, the healing XP demand is much more, and you may see people employ the services of a combat medic to hand out mind diseases, which they will then heal. You won't need this as an entertainer, but keep it in mind if you plan to progress through dancer and/or musician.

Missions

Where do I find Entertainer Missions?
You may receive Entertainer Missions from Entertainer Mission Terminals.

How do I get a mission from a terminal?
There are many Entertainer Mission Terminals scattered throughout the galaxy. Use the terminal as you would any other, but make sure you select the proper tab (Dance or Music) depending on what type of performance you want to do. Default is dance.

How do I complete my mission?
Go inside the building indicated by the waypoint you're given with your mission. Perform for about 10 minutes, non-stop. Flourishes do not matter in completing missions, but they sure make your time there a lot more enjoyable.

Can I take more than one mission?
As with regular missions, you may take two at a time. If you take both missions for the same location, they will complete within a few seconds of one another, effectively doubling your pay for that 10 minute period.

My mission won't complete. What's wrong?
You must be inside the building indicated by the waypoint. Standing on the waypoint itself will not work, because it's outside the structure. Make sure you're using the correct performance. All Entertainer missions picture a Nalargon, and all Entertainer missions say "Dancer" under mission type. Sometimes you can tell from the mission's text whether you should be dancing or playing music, but sometimes even that will not work. The easiest way to avoid this problem is to make sure you choose the correct type of mission from the terminal.

Macros

What macro should I use to grind dance XP?

You will need to modify things to fit your specific character and skill level, but use something like the following 2 macros:
MACRO: dancegrind
/bandflo off;
/pause 1;
/startd formal; (change to your highest level dance as needed)
/pause 1;

What macro should I use to grind Image Design XP?

There are two ways to macro ID grinding. The first only requires yourself. The second requires a second character, which could be your alt.

The first method relies on you image designing yourself. At this early stage of ID, this goes fast enough. Just run the following macro and make changes in the ID window. The macro will automatically accept those changes.
MACRO: idgrind
/image self;
/pause 5;
/ui action defaultButton;
/macro idgrind;

The second method requires running 2 macros, one on yourself and one on the character being IDed.
Macro for IDer named "meid"
/im;
/pause 5;
/ui action defaultButton;
/macro meid;
Macro for subject named "idyes"
/ui action defaultButton;
/pause 1;
/macro idyes;
This will open the image design window, pause for 5 seconds, giving you time to make the changes, and then accept the changed. The other character will automatically accept the changes without having to do anything.

type /dump to stop macros.

I made a macro and put it on the tool bar button as sometimes you can't get to type to stop the macro.

macro Dumper
/dump;

Very simple.
